I've been puzzled by one of the lines on my Selden spinnaker pole for some time, hopefully someone has the answer.

It's a big pole with a bayonet fitting on the inboard end. There is a control line at the inboard end which trips the jaws at the outboard end, and above the pole (also at the inboard end) is a ring on the end of a bungee cord leading through a pulley and anchored inside the pole.

Pictures on the Selden site show this ring around the pole topping lift. Is this to help lift the pole when dip-gybing? Be grateful to be enlightened - here's some pics. You can clearly see the line from the inboard end running at right angles to the topping lift in the first picture.

Surmise

If the pole topping lift is led through the ring and clipped on at the outboard end of the pole, does the bungee pull the topping lift back towards the mast? If so, the purpose could be to allow the pole to be rigged prior to a hoist, but left with the outboard end on deck, with the topping lift kept clear of genny sheets /leach in case of a last minute requirement to tack or gybe.

Re: Surmise

Pretty certain Ken's right. Very neat solution.

Re: Surmise

I think you are right Ken. I found this on the Selden site:

"For racing sailors there is a retraction feature for pulling back and controlling the topping lift when it's not in use. Always ready to set the spinnaker again."

I'll try this next time - will this make me a racing sailor?

Re: Surmise

Tome, you'll certainly look like a racing sailor, and that's very important. btw I put a shock cord round the pole ends (if double ended) to trap the tlift until 'deployment'. Not as neat, but it works.

Ouch!

I'll have you know that Amaya (as Gladeye) won the Governors cup in 2000, a 1700 mile race from Cape Town to St Helena.

Sniff sniff.
