Another solo sailor in trouble

What is a 24 foot boat doing going to the Canaries in a Force 8 that was forecasted!

15miles NW of Holyhead is rather too close to the Skerries & the associated overfalls for my choice of passage plan too.

Some 24 footers are well capable of handling even the overfalls in wind over tide, others might not (cue references to Buckler 24 or a Mac . . . )

I did wonder initially if the boat was placed where it would be irretrievably damaged in order to protect the sailor! I have heard of that sort of thing happening, but I'm sure its not the case here.

An Anderson 22 would be absolutely fine, particularly when handled by dinghy sailors

Yes. Otherwise they might still be looking for others.

"Lone yachtsman rescued from sea
Rescue teams spent the night assisting a 24-foot yacht with one sailor on board after it ran into difficulty in gale-force winds off Anglesey."

Why would "they might be looking for other:rolleyes:", or is this an attempt just to knock "solo sailors"?

Moondance sent a Mayday, which initiated the rescue. One assumes that either the yachtsman told them or the CG would have asked "how many on board", so unlikely to be any "otherwise"

Stop crying 'wolf'!

I don't now what you are on, but could you send me some please?

I posted a link to a recent rescue. They are often popular threads as most of us like to learn lessons from others & therefore they create useful discussions. And then there are the silly, pointless comments . . .

"Another solo sailor in trouble"

Rather than

"Yacht is rescued in high winds off Anglesey coast
Lone yachtsman rescued from sea
Rescue teams spent the night assisting a 24-foot yacht with one sailor on board after it ran into difficulty in gale-force winds off Anglesey."

That's too long for a thread title, you'd have to abbreviate it to something like "Another solo sailor in trouble"

"Lone Yachtsman" rescued!

And your point is?

Are you suggesting he wasn't alone (ie Solo), or that he wasn't in trouble?

And yes, "Another" because a lady on her own recently died off Land's End, - another dangerous & rocky headland like the NW corner of Anglesey.

Come on, what in your fevered imagination am I supposed to have done wrong?

I do find it odd that somebody would head off to the Canaries at this time of year. Biscay can be dreadful and coast hopping a very long process waiting for weather gaps.

I've always worried about single handers on long passages after being in the Caribbean. The Safety and Security net put out alerts for boats that hadn't arrived at the destiination at the time they said. 75% of the boats were crewed and the great majority turned up late or had diverted due to bad weather. I suspect many of the others just didn't report where/when they arrived.

The other 25% were single handers, and about 30% of them were reported safe and some others may not have reported in. Given they make up probably about 0.1% of all long distance boats it seems to be rather unsafe.

Here we go again. An innocent report gets "trolled".
Give us a break, please.

heres a kit kat, Robert.
