ANOTHER SCAM??

Got my boat up for sale on Boatshop24.co.uk and had undoubtedly the worse attempt at a scam ever.

Simple short avertisement on the site. E-mail from a MARK JERF (Farm Jerk anag) asking for further details. Only a mobile phone contact which surprise, surprise is always busy.

Sent full details of spec including price which was on the advertisement, then an email from this individual stating his client wants the boat (unseen) and will handle the shipping.

Email asks for all my bank details for electronic transfer.

Not exactly subtle, and the person to send the details to - Mr John Smith. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I had a reply asking about the car and how many miles it had done. We seem to attract the less sophisticated scams?!

clearly dodgy but forgive my naive ignorance. If you had supplied bank details what happens next? With those details (as I understand it) all they can do is put money IN your account. I assume there is then a means of getting it back out once boat has been aquired?

Two scenarios, they pay with a dodgy cheque or bank draft, which the bank says is okay, until they discover six weeks later to be stolen, or they add the twist that they pay you more than the asking price and get you to return the extra amount, along with your boat.

There is also the one where a potential ID theft attempt is stalled because they need your bank details to complete the ID.

right. the ID theft thing is scary, but as regards the payment - they don't need your bank details for a cheque or draft, only for a direct bank transfer. I just wondered if some of these guys had pefected a way of getting money OUT of your account via this method. Bit worrying as I give out bank details all the time to customers in my own business. So far without problems.

Now we have "PAYPAL" who seem to be able to pull money out of anybodies account.

Only fraud I have ever suffered was Paypal taking money from a credit card. I got it back from the card company, but never had any reply from Paypal to explain why.

Whenever you issue a cheque, you pass on details of your bank account - the sort code, a/c no and a/c name. This has been going on for yonks so I cannot see it presents a security issue.

You would think that a common courtesy wouldnt you? After all if I took money from your credit card you would ask me why and how - wouldnt you? I wonder how many of us there are that just get no reply - while the money goes missing.

Having read the link posted by Ges what would happen if I advertised my boat and, on receiving the above (scam) reply, forwarded details of my (new/seperate) bank account. I advise the bank to check the cheque, it clears into the account. I withdraw the cash and then???

Not sure, but do not tell the Police. Someone we know put up his small boat for sale, got a similar reply, and banked the funds, thought it a bit doggy so spoke to the fuzz. They said it was a money laundering scheme, confiscated the money and his boat. I do not think he ever saw either again.

always have them fill in this as well
If you're selling a boat, print two copies out and complete them in front of the buyer.

Each party should sign and keep a copy of this document as proof of sale.
