Ooh err!
I wonder how close they actually were, as this looks like it was taken with a long lens and photos can be misleading.
What I find incredible is the crass comments of the "experts" who obviously know nothing, but feel compelled to tell everybody how things should be done.

Runs aground if it changes course?

Slows down if it is the overtaking vessel!

Similar problem, ferry approaching Poole as I was passing Old Harry bound for West Country. It was forward of my port bow and turned towards me. I altered course to starboard (towards Old Harry - discretion being the better part of valour). He continued to alter course towards me - I turned further away and called him - first on 16 then any other Channel I could think of - Couldn't read his name so call was to "XXX Ferry approaching Poole Harbour."

I finally passed down his port side less than 50 mtrs off and began to turn to starboard. He finally responded to me as the and asked me where I was. I pointed out that I was now 25 mtrs from his port quarter (the distance having been reduced by his turn). Then saw somebody with binoculars (not particularly useful by then) appear on bridge to look back at me

He told me he had not seen me! It was a cloudless sky on a beautiful June Morning with perfect visibility.

I reported the matter to the Coastguard - they reviewed his plot and remarked that they could not understand his change of direction and asked if I wanted to make an official complaint. I decided not to in view of the potential mountain of paperwork.

I have tried calling on the VHF the very ferry photographed to find out her intentions... and was studiously ignored.

She comes in and out at a not inconsiderable pace...

I had one of those buggers overtake me just south of the IOW and he didn't leave much more than a couple of boat lengths between us (my boat lengths, not his). Looking at the photo in isolation it looks kind of close but if you saw the incident all the way through, I wonder how different it would look?

Still, it's a nice photo for the press to write a "story" about.

Try French next time, after all they (the French) expected that that French should be the adopted as the international language. They also wanted the Meridian to be in Paris so probably still sulking!

In return for getting Greenwich adopted as the merdian in 1884, we promised to adopt the metric system.

At the speed we have been working on that, it is hardly surprising the French are still sulking. :)

I can't imagine there would be much wind in the lee of that thing, so I doubt the yacht is overtaking the ferry.

Motor vessel and sailing vessel: motor vessel keeps clear

Overtaking vessel: keeps clear

Arrogant, lazy, incompetent or drunk watch leader: stands on regardless
