A lot of people are not fortunate to boat year round. So they have to relearn their skills at the start of every season, and as you go further north the season is getting shorter. You can add age/confusion, cross wind, equipment failure etc etc.

At the very least he had enough presence of mind not to try and accelerate hard out of the situation prior to impact. They say if you are going to crash, do it slowly. Most bigger damage occurs in this situation trying to “power” out under panic.
