On Saturday took Seabird across to Cowes, as we reached the end of the Hamble river and the 6 knot limit I pushed the button of the trim tabs down and the little bank of green and red LED lights just flickered and just one side dropped down, then with a feeling of dread pushed the up button and all the lights came on then they all went off...Oh god a trim tab problem... I had checked they were working just the week before prior to the boat going back in the water... Looked over the side, could see one side was down, other side was difficult to tell in the swell, but with the aim of a boat hook kinda thought they were only down half way.....

Back at the helm then I noticed that whenever I pushed the trim tab button (which by that time I had quite a bit..!) the rev counter would drop 500rpm/1000rpm.... oh god... what's occurring?! Then just to try something else I switched on the engine instrument lights and again the rev counter gauge dropped (engine note fine, so just an instrument issue..?!). So what is going through my mind is earthing problem / certainly power/electrical / short in the trim tabs... ??? who knows... but obviously heart sank. Motored over to Cowes, got into Island Harbour and moored up, daughter asks if she can turn the engine off... yes please I say and continue fiddling around with the springs. Then she's says the engine won't switch off... so I look up and indeed she is pushing the red kill button, but nothing happening.... WTF...

I guess most on here will have already guessed... but what I had completely failed to notice was the ignition key was in the OFF position! SWMBO had put something on the engine key ring just before we had left Mercury while I was untying the boat and by doing so had switched the ignition to "off"...

So turned ignition on and suddenly everything back working as it should!! :):):)

........ Only thing is, someone has now told me I could well have burnt my alternator out....? Anyone got any comment on this ?:confused::confused:

Easily done.

I don't see why the alternator will have been affected. The system knows when it does not need to take charge, and copes with the alt output accordingly.

I made the same error on Rafiki a couple of years ago, and no harm done.

cant assist on the alternator issue but sure some wise people will be along soon! can sympathise with you tho! im kinda dreading this weekend as i know i will make some of the same! think it will be a slow few days to get used to the boat again and go from there!

fingers crossed the weather holds out!!

Some systems have a relay in the cable from alternator to battery (more likely if the route is via the starter motor). The relay is controlled by the engine electrics, so if the engine is turned off the battery is disconnected from it. On such a system, turning off the key can open the relay meaning that the power from the alternator suddenly has nowhere to go and blows the diode pack in the alternator.

I think such a wiring arrangement is relatively uncommon though. Seems like an accident waiting to happen and I wouldn't have it on a boat of mine.

Howard, yes it was first weekend on the boat this season and we did consider staying put in Mercury, but got to say a short shaken-down run was really good, but not only did I have this little occurrence, also found a crack in the heads pump which meant a small leak and lack of suction to pump out... (nice). At Richardsons chandlery in IH new Jabsco pump unit £64 or complete new Jabsco compact heads just £99! so Sunday morning had the nice job of ripping out the old unit and fitting nice shiny new heads along with latest locking pump handle...all very good! Also just realised I have left something on the boat so may well shoot down Sat am to pick up... & may well not be in a hurry to return home so will come and say hello.

thanks for that, hopefully mine is not fitted with such a relay!

mistakes at sub 30kts are manageable.. somehow, I don't reckon you have that luxury in your boat Howard... good luck hope it all goes to plan.

p.s. thought you were wetting her bum the weekend just gone?

its all a bit busy at the moment but I'm told she will be launched tomorrow (or maybe done today!)

Gary, can you send Gwen a mail to confirm when your going there so she can try and make sure your berth is free?
