I expect that you lot have all seen them before, but we saw our first basking sharks on Saturday.
A couple of miles off Helford, and a couple of miles south of St Anthonys Head, we were drifting along waiting for the wind to return when we spotted a couple of fins. We realised they were not dolphins because they were not moving like dolphins. We were on a course which would intercept them, doing about 1.5 knots in the barest bit of wind, and soon came close - or rather he came over to us. We were towing the dinghy and he came within a few feet of the stern of the dinghy, glided alongside us and carried on.
At least as long as the boat (24'!), gliding along a couple of feet below the surface, huge mouth agape.
We saw 2 or 3 more later in the day at a distance, but seeing this guy so close was awesome!
An extraordinary sight, and made our day.
