Another example of poor service

I've just had a very frustrating experience trying to buy a new propellor for Bedouin. I spoke to a company called 'CJR Propellors' a few weeks ago and decided what would be most suitable...it only remained to complete the measurements, confirm the size and place the order....

Obviously it is rather difficult to measure the boat while in the water so I had to wait until she was out to check that there was sufficient clearance to fit the suggested model.

Came out for a quick scrub on Friday, so phoned up CJR, tape measure in one hand, credit card in the other and got ...

... absolutely nowhere

Three phone calls and a fax later they still haven't bothered to reply. Boat is now back in the water, and credit-card back in the wallet. Sadly this is by no means an isolated experience, but it is particularly frustrating since I will now have to wait another couple of months until the next scrub before I can do anything more.

Obviously I'm now looking for an alternative supplier so if anyone knows a reliable supplier of folding/feathering propellors I'm looking for recommendations!

A better way of deciding what you need as a propeller. Ring the engine manufacturers, and from the engine and gearbox you have they should be able to recommend the diameter and pitch of the propeller. You might know the shaft size from fitting anodes so you just need to confirm the taper of the shaft which hopefully will be standard.

I bought a three bladed Flex-o-Fold propeller from CJR and it was not the greatest service I have ever had. They promised two weeks delivery and I gave them two months notice. In the end, and after many phone calls and much hassle I got the prop the day before it was due to be fitted. Luckily it was fine, but I really wanted it early in case anything was missing etc. The Flex-o-Fold is tremendous delivering everything that was claimed for it at the Boat Show

A final thought, your new propeller might need lapping in so have some grinding paste handy when you fit it.

I ordered a JF feathering prop from Darglow Engineering at the Southampton Boat Show, but did not get around to giving them the shaft taper sizes until a week before I launched this year.
They made and despatched the prop in less than a week and have answered my silly queries by Email promptly. Couldn't ask for better service.Mind you the boat was only launched at the weekend so I don't know if it actually works yet!

Can't complain about the service of Autoprop. They have been helpful over advice re shaft taper and delivery of the prop was exactly as promised. This winter they supplied two anodes (one to fit, one spare) by post after ordering by phone, without even asking about reimbursement.

Very pleased with the propeller, too.

Agree - Autoprop good

I too have had good service from Bruntons Propellers (Autoprop people). Have ordered spares by phone and usually get them within 48 hours. Advice is also given willingly.

Cheers, Jerry

Unfortunately Autoprop is not an option for me - I did talk to Bruntons about it but I simply don't have enough room to swing one of the right size.

I've tried to talk to Darglow but can't find a current contact number - they must either have moved or gone out of business.

Needless to say CJR Propellors have still not got back to me after almost a week!

Thanks - either my brain is softening or they had a problem with their telephone earlier in the week. Got through now though.
