Just fired the Eber up for the first time in a few months .Now it starts winding up rather coughing and spluttering and popping. it then picks up on runs ok for a few minutes then starts spluttering and lots of smoke picks up for a bit then shuts down . The time span seen to be the same on each start up . I suspect fuel but since its a sod to get at any other ideas beforecI start delving in the locker.

cheers

Try taking the glo plug screen out and cleaning it or replace it. Sounds as if it is coked up. Then run for an hour on paraffin or heating oil.

Any dips in the exhaust run?
Tampon inserted lashed to wire coat hanger will soak up any moisture which has collected?

The symptoms you describe are highly indicitive of fuel issues, either water or dirt, it is simple to confirm, get some clean new fuel, even a 1 litre bottle will do and insert the pick up in it and see what the difference is. You say it's the first time it's been started for a while which is not a good thing, try to run it for an hour or so each month>
