I have a D5 eberspacher that will not fire up. It will go through the start up phase with the motor running, the fuel pump kicks in as normal and then the motor picks up speed to maximum as though it's fired up and pumping hot air. Trouble is the air's cold so obviously not firing up but goes through the normal processes as if it is.

I have cleaned glow plug, very dirty but now thoroughly cleaned. Pump checked and pumping fuel OK.

Any idea's where to look next apart from Yellow pages?

All help appreciated.

Thanks

We have a D5W ( venerable ex - BT van!)

Does the glow plug get really hot (be careful..)?
Put a voltmeter between the tip of the glowplug and the body of the Eber (clean metal) - while somebody else starts the sequence.
If you have much under 11V you could have either:
Grubby connectors in the wiring
Inadequate wiring = voltage lost to the 25A trying to get through...
A tired battery which does not like 25A pulled -losing voltage to it's own internal resistance.
You could find the exhaust full of unburned diesel...drain off...

Have a look at these issues before Yellow Pages :)

Thanks Graeme, I'll look at those items and see what I find. Appreciate your help.

There is a fuse fitted on the underside of the control unit check if this is blown.
Usually glass with blue design on it.
If the glow plus is as dirty as you say there is a good chance the combustion chamber is badly coked up.
If you have a battery moniter or amp meter you can observe how many amps are getting drawn during start up, if its only 3-5 then the glow plug has not cut in for whatever reason.
The D3L draws 21amp while firing up and this drops to 3-3.5 once flame is established and glow plug cuts out.
