in keeping with my lack of expertise in the issue of compasses and electrical supply, would any of you like to offer an opinion about the suitability of mounting my compass above the companionway of my boat along with the displays for the depth sounder and speed? It would be lovely to have the compass there but I don't want it to go askew every time the depth changes!

RTFM...

Check your instrument manuals. Most marine electronics makers quote a "compass safe distance" for their products. Raymarine instruments for example typically specify "at least 230mm from a compass".

B&G manual downloads...

Most old B&G user manuals can be downloaded from the B&G site here. If your manuals aren't there, assume the Raymarine advice is correct and go for 230mm separation.

Re: B&G manual downloads...

Thanks for that. Found mine on there. Interestingly, the advice is 4" from the compass. I'm going to do it!
