I want to add 30 metres of rope to my existing 30 metres of no 8 anchor chain. I have a SL manual windlass with a chain/rope gypsy. Westerly Fulmar.
I can do the join OK.
The questions are these.

Will the anchor rope come off the gypsy and down the hole into the anchor locker just as easily as the chain does or will it bunch up into an unholy mess at my feet just when exhaustion sets in from cranking.) The hole (hawse pipe is simply a 3" dia pipe with a lid. 4 inches long running vertically into the anchor locker.) I dont want to add more chain because of the weight.

Assuming it does get down there OK, will it come up freely when required?

Am also considering changing from CQR anchor to Delta anchor, any views on this would also be welcome?

You should be able to pull the rope in by hand without the windlass, it's a lot less tiring!
Whether the rope behaves in the pipe and locker depends a lot on the type of rope. If it is not to stiff it should be ok.

Hi Tim,

Everything will depend on the way you will connect the rope to the chain!

If you use a thimble and a shackle, no way!
If you make a splice it would be slightly better… the rode will come off the gypsy but with no guaranty that it will go down easily, you may have to help it by hand – Nobody is perfect!

But then they are more chances that the rode will come up freely. Give it a try…

Anchor choice - You will be more satisfied with a Delta anchor than with a CQR, but consider also one of the “New Gen” anchor such as the RAYA – Rocna – Spade – Supreme (in alphabetical order) – They are all by far more efficient than the Delta anchor..

We've got the same set-up as you. I BACKspliced 16mm 3-strand nylon to the chain (8mm). It runs fine around the gypsy and generally down the pipe as well without too much if any manual guidance. If it does kink, then that's an excuse to stop and have a breather! It comes up the other way (when anchoring) with no problem. Octoplait might be better, but I already had the 3-strand rope doing nothing in the locker and thought I might as well try it.
