I am busy re-wiring my boat and want to do away with the rather old and bulky regulator and am looking to replace things with an alternator with inbuilt regulator.

Is this something that you would advise or should I stick with the old stuff.

Can I just buy a suiotable alternator from a car parts shop.

Any help appreciated.

t's a good idea but check
The rotation
Mounting ,you can get a special bracket made to take an alternator
Cut in speed it should not be a problem but check that.
I would go to a Lucas main agent so that you will be able to get the best advice,Lucas do a set of data cards which have all the test procedures ,I got a set some years ago and they are very handy

An automotive regulator is fine for a cranking battery but is less than ideal for house batteries (deep cycle) .If you have only the one battery then I suppose your electrical draw is fairly minimal and you could get away with it.

sailingindepth.com has a good article on boat's electrical systems.
Happy New Year.

Try your local auto-electrical specialist (see yellow pages etc). In boating areas they will be used to having odd marine components bought in, and have the facilties to run up and check the alt - usually for free - and to rebuild/repair/recond using the correct components. You might even find a replacement unit 'off the shelf' without having to change brackets and belts etc.
