The EA recently announced that another £25 million from anglers' licences will be ploughed back into improving fisheries this year. Apparently, all money raised by rod licence sales goes straight back into the sport. (see EA website report here http://www.visitthames.co.uk/articl...glers_thanks_to_record_rod_licence_sales.html )
Well, there you go, lots and lots of little bits of money obviously benefit an activity to a far greater extent than a much smaller number of large gobs of dosh aka Craft Licence Fees.
The answer is obvious - cut licence fees by 90% and we will soon have millions of boats back on the Thames with loads of dosh being spent on upgrading facilities - Seemples !
(PS - picked up a rumour this morning that credit card swipe machines are about to be installed at several Thames locks - likely to be chosen from those between Teddington and Henley which includes Windsor - as a trial prior to rolling them out at all locks in time for the 2012 Olympics.
The EeYay-YouPay system will ensure that sufficient income to cover planned maintenance is generated on an annual basis by dynamic revenue collection and control software developed for the Differential Expenditure For River Access (DEFRA) initiative .
Full licence holders will get a specially designed Boat Operations-Locks card (BoLocks) for their personal use but casual users will need to use a credit or debit card to transit locks.
Remember - you heard it here first !)
