So, it's 1.30 am. There are 4 regulars and 14 anonymous visitors on the forum, 3 of whom are checking up on members' profiles... so what are they up to, eh?
Who cares!? They may be passing through, just checking the site out.
All the regulars know each other, and can quickly pass judgement on the advice given by any particular individual. For instance, I'd take any comment by BarryH on small craft engines as being likely to be over 95% accurate, and any comment by tcm on Med marinas or restaurants as over 95% accurate, and anything about commercial shipping or Wooden boats, I'd give Mirelle a similar rating. And so on, and so forth.
Newbies don't know people, so they like to look at profiles to see what their background is. Not particularly illuminating compared to getting to know peoples posting over serveral years, but it's all they have to go on, and some peoples profiles are quite amusing anyway, Mine is just a dogs ear by the way, and any newbie would run a mile after reading it, which is partially the idea, as I talk a load of cobblers at the best of times
PS, number of anon visitors at this time of night? The internet is worldwide, and some countries are wide awake now. YBW is famous for its forums, and people from Oz, NZ, Asia, US and all over visit while we in the UK sleep?

The trick is to not divulge any information that you dont want anybody to have. Try checking my profile. It's blank. By the same token I don't go nosing through other people's profiles as quite frankly I'm not interested.
It's not healthy to be so paranoid Matthew ....... you should at least complete your profile with details of what boat you have, where you do your boating, where you live etc. There may be lots of guys on here who live close to you and can share boating experiences over a pint. Or maybe a day's boating together.
