Anode\'s

Our boat, a Sealine S28 is moored on a freshwater river, we pass through a lock into saltwater. What anodes should we fit magnesium or zinc? dealers, marina's seem to have no idea. This must be a common problem any advice greatly appreciated.

It's a 50/50 question as you are on both waters, I would make notes on wear on the waters with the opposite anodes then change to the anode that suits the water, as an engineer I see zinc ones on the rivers, the boats don't seem to have any problems if the anodes are cleaned regularly.

In my opinion the need for anodes on fresh water is very dubious, provided it is clean fresh water. Magnesium or aluminium anodes will be too fierce for sea use. I would fit zinc anodes for the sea and not worry about fresh water problems.

Re: Anode\'s

Used zinc anodes on our boat for 4 years on a freshwater lake with no probs. That's what the manfr fitted. They still looked like new after that time. Big difference when we moved to warm salt water though - must change them annually, but still use Zn of course.

Interesting. From what you say, I'm surprised that electric anodes are not more widely used (or perhaps they are!) Can you give details of your system please.

ps if they have not yet corrected what is obviously a typo, you will find that the MMS Direct site is offering a couple of RUBBER anodes!!

I have the merc crusier system. they protect the three volvo outdrives we have and work very well. Esepcially as we have s/steel props on outdrives!

I believe the engineer bought them from a merc outdrive dealer.
