Anode

you learn something new every day, better change the way i clean mine.

I thought it was wire brushes you should not use because little bits of steel wire left embedded in the surface will lead to a rapid loss of zinc due to galvanic action.

I think however you would have to leave an awful lot of your wire brush stuck in them to cause any major problems.

Thank you all. I bought a new one, maybe I will keep it for next year. But one final silly question..... the original one had a soft pad on the back but the new one does not. Is the pad necessary? Or could I attach the new one without a back pad? Thx again

Yes get a pad, apart from everything else it stops bits of twigs etc getting stuck behind the anode if there is no pad fitted.
Most places supply the pad with the anode.
