Reconditioned diesel in my opinion. You'll still get better economy and less sensitivity to electrical failure. I don't believe the stuff about greater safety, as I blat around standing above 40 gallons of petrol myself, but some may also say that's a factor.
Why reconditioned? You'll never recoup the cost of installing a new engine when you come to sell, but this way you'll drop a bit less if/when the day comes. Go for a reputable supplier, mind you. Lancing Marine seem to get a lot of favourable mentions on here.
I would look around for a kad 32 and sx or 290dp leg seen quite a few done that way, you will still save money and have thereliabilty of a diesel and better resale value.
Unless its really giving you grief would struggle along with the old lump. What to do depends on if you intend keeping the boat or will be upgrading at some point.
Firstly, unless you intend to keep the boat forever, absolutely no point in puttting a megamoney new diesel unit in a.... err classic old lady /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif,will cost a fortune and no real benefit moneywise when you sell ,plus extra complicated leg stuff adjustments ie. prop size and reduction gearing .
Might be worth a secondhand diesel but still got to sort leg/tanks and pipework.
Mebbe worth just spending a few quid fettling your old lump with a nice new carb and a decent electronic ignition and keep the change in your pocket.
Yep reckon I need about 180hp ideally (min 150 max 210)
The old lump is unreliabel and under powered.
coastal rides seem to ahve a few options. i'm not worried about re-sale value as i don't see any reason to sell. i might buy a speed boat just to balt around in but sell Kelisha - perish the thought !!
You know what I did with Solitaire. The KAD 32 option would mean you will not to have to modify the transome, but my choice would still be to look for a Yamaha 370 sti amd leg combo.
I'm even thinking about looking for another Sprint to do the same thing.
i would be tempted to go for an AD41B (200hp) but if the holiday has a similar engine space to the Sprint I dont think you would have the length to fit one. I saw a Holiday at Essex Boatyards once which had had the Kad 32 conversion and it made it into a superb economical cruiser. Good luck in whatever you decide to do. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Hi,
I am with Solitaire, I took out 2x 5.8 omc engines and replaced with the Yamaha 370 sti, and I must say they are bullet proof.ecconomical, light weight to power ratio and if everybody buys them perhaps the parts cost will come down.

It is a Toyota bus engine - just don't buy Yamaha parts!
Try French marine as they will sort out a free quote for petrol and diesel engines and they are dealers for yamaha, yanmar & volvo they do also have a few second hand yanmar and volvos in stock rebuilt and ready to install. I recently went down that route myself and they seemed very very helpful...
Just as background reading, there is an article in this month's PBO (Rustler 36 sailbo on cover) about putting 2 KAD43s into a previously petrol-powered Targa33. It looked a nice job and the guy even got a new dash panel (becuase the diesels had different instruments) made up by Axon in Yorkshire, who supply dash panels and electrical breaker panels to Fairline.
Ben - me old mucker !!! good to hear from you and yes Sandras the name !!!! given to me by ToMo I hasnt to add !!!!!
I often tell the story when you came when Petem's phone call to Matt was met with "I'm in a yatch but I'll send Ben".. That was when the said Volvo overheated in the solent at the first Mercury meet. What a sight to see 333 blasting to our rescue !!!!
