How long is a piece of string?
Just to many variables.
Simple it's more than I can iether afford or justify. going to do it any way.

I had an old early 70's 24 ft, paid cash, kept on a mooring I laid myself, cheep cheerfull lots of fun per $ bill.
a bit of elbow grease to get ready.

Now an old early 80's 35. Paid for but no new car. who needs a new car?
Annual cost as yet unknown.

Average 32?
lots to choose from an old nic to a brand spanking new. and huge difference in cost.

I didn't bother to keep detailed records for last year but for a 33 foot sailing yacht in a marina in Kent approximately:

Marina fees : £2500
Routine maintenance : £500
Fuel : £300 (including probably £150 for heating)
River licence: £50
Insurace : £800

That does not include any contribution towards other periodic expenses such as replacement rigging and sails. I haven't given that much thought yet, but I guess it probably represents another £300 to £400 per annum if you assume a couple of thousand for a new suite of sails that last six years - possibly this is optimistic!

In 2012, used the boat one weekend.

Cost per mile: £200

It will be less this year.

As I am a long term owner, I also count cost of replacing engine/gearbox/rigging/sails/electronics per year too, so a real cost of ownership. Averages out around 8-9% of boat value.

Perhaps the question could be rephrased as: " What would you give up in order to carry on this or that hobby"?
For example, multiple hobby cars, bikes, boats, fags, family holidays in resorts or winter skiing, private flying, football season ticket.. Mistresses, alimonies, multiple children, rest homes for aged relatives, second homes, new cars, kitchens, watches, gadgets..

It is quite a list!

I think that put like that , yachtin is an absolute pleasure, a bargin quality time innit .
Put 10 or 15% of the boats value aside each year and it is then 'there' for odds sods and sundries, big shiny sundries too.

As a newbie i will let you know the rule: if you have to ask, you cannot afford it. I once asked an owner - can I have a budget target please to work to 'sadly James we have tried that in the past and it just does not work very well, so the boat has no budget', that does not mean you can tweek it like a race car and get custom bolts made up at £36 each :)

This often quoted 10% of the boat's value does not take into account age and depreciation. We've just bought ours new at a price that brings tears to the eyes if you think about it too much - there's a very similar boat up for sale in the same marina that is ten years old and has an asking price which is almost exactly 50% of what we have just paid - will his running costs be half ours?

About £6k. Should be about £4k but there is always something like a new sail, re-teaking the cockpit, EPIRB, liferaft, and it goes on .... These can be avoided as not essentials like somewhere to park her but what the hell?

Clyde, swinging mooring for 6 months, marina for 3 and the hard for 3, and she'll be 31 years young in September.

You're all bonkers. Where do you get all your spare money from? I want some!

I pay less than £500 to moor and insure my boat each year. I'll probably have spent another £500 over this year bringing it up to scratch after purchase. A bit of petrol each time we go sailing and that's enough for me. Any more and I know I'd start feeling I had to use it more to 'get my moneys worth'.

It's no 32 footer though...

Is the OP MAD!!! surely this is the road to insanity, ruin and depression.

Just enjoy the sailing! My rule is that if you are still having fun - crack on! When the fun stops, sell up and move on.

Not mad just trying to get my head round why a neighbour last night said, ''i don't know how you afford the house, yacht, speedboats, cars, flying etc'' my answer was its not that much compared to your new car each year, holidays, big tvs, designer clothes, junk food, fags and booze......non of which i have/do! I reckon boat is about 3k a year on average.

It's not really that good to think about it, is it?

Marina £3000
Insurance £300
Fuel £200
Lift outs/antifoul/anodes etc £1-300 depending on year.

The other expenses vary so much year by year it's hard to quantify.

Sundries this year: Not much unless something breaks
Last year: new sprayhood, dodgers, added second battery with ACR, plus a few bits and bobs so around £1200
Next year: Probably needs new main sail
Year after: Standing rigging will probably need doing.

Since the boat's probably only worth about £8000, the annual %age is a bit eyewatering though!

Have you tried putting it in the water and sailing it? Then a wee bit of racing gives lots of opportunities to spend a bit more. My £6k does include food and booze and is for around 3knm travel per year but £2 per mile despite the free wind makes a mobo look reasonable.

Suppose it depends on what you pay for
£1100 marina
£300 insurance
£400 fuel
£ bits/repairs
