Hello,
I am in the process of purchasing a Beneteau 523. As I still have commitments in the UK I am unable to spend as much time on her as I would like. I am therefore looking to find a berth somewhere with relatively easy Airport access.
I am looking at either Sicily or Greece so that I can take a few 4 weeks ish cruises and get to Sardinia, Adriatic or Greek Islands.

Any advice or thoughts on locations would be great. Yacht security, costs and as I mentioned ease of transport from the UK are key.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Iain

As Will has said, Gouvia is an ideal spot. We have been there since 2004 so it must be good. Flights from many UK airports in summer and not too difficult in winter via Athens. However, if a tight budget is a problem, one of the marinas/yards 65miles south at Preveza will be significantly cheaper but I have known peope come back to Gouvia, having tried Preveza for a year. Preveza not as easy to get to in winter.

Aegina. I leave home at 5 30am Chester and am on the boat at 3:00pm Aegina Greece.

The choice is Gouvia and a safe boat without a scratch or taking it's chances in Aegina where it will get hit by all and sundry who have no interest in keeping their boats in pristine condition, UK style. Kalamaki is better than that place for damage avoidance AND nearer to the airport. However I think the original request was for a base where the OP could cruise South Italy, the Adriatic and the Sardinia region. Regular canal fees and the wind tunnel which is the gulf might prove a major disadvantage and inconvenience if the Attica area were chosen.

You might want to take a look at Ragusa or Licata in S Sicily..........they tick most of your boxes......although everywhere has `disadvantages`... Sicily can be windy in winter... I think ,on balance, I`d go for Ragusa........Ryanair flights into Comiso.....Easyjet (among others) into Catania......and reasonable bus services to each....which the Greeks have a habit of NOT doing .

Probably the YachtClub de Ragusa Marina might make a very good choice in his circumstances.

Thank you all for your suggestions and information. They are really useful. Gouvia looks really good, probably a favourite at the moment but I will investigate Ragusa.
What a great forum this is!
Thanks again.

I am an RYA member so that is great. It looks like a fair price. Many thanks

looks like you are being drawn inexorably to the delights of Gouvia.

just another vote from me who echoes all other positive comments above. There's nowhere more convenient in the Ionian for flights and transfers. Compared to UK you will find moorings cheap AND available. One of the few med marinas I have ever dealt with that actually answers emails too!
