Hi,
I am in the process of buying a yacht that I would like to base in either Sicily or Greece. I am not quite free of the ties here in the UK to be able to spend the majority of my time on her so need to look at an annual berth somewhere that is reasonably easily accessed from Airports with good links to London. I am thinking of Sicily or Greece so I can access either Sardinia, West Coast Italy etc or Adriatic, Greek Islands during a few 1 month "breaks" from work... (Hopefully!)

I would appreciate any insight into costs, yacht security, transport or indeed any other info you can share. I am new at this so my mind is open and ready to listen..

Thanks in advance

Iain

If you are considering Greece, bear in mind the new Yacht tax that they are going to introduce which runs from 1 January to 31 December each year. If you berth at 45 foot yacht there in November, this tax can be €1240 which will run for a month and then you have to pay again the €1240 on 1st January!!

This is on top of your berthing/mooring fees. :(

Licata in south of Sicily is a nice marina and they will do a deal for long-term stays.
Probably a little far from airport but you cant have everything.

Having experienced most places in the Med - you'll find Greece the least expensive (unless you have a >22m yacht) despite the tax alluded to. It's also by far and away the best cruising in the whole of the Med.
A good alternative would be one of the Monfalcone yards - 5' by taxi to the airport and Ryanair and more efficient than most as well as being cheaper than anywhere else in Italy. Near Trieste @ the head of the Adriatic.
You'll be quoted 3-5 year waiting lists by most marinas for an all-year-round berth, but don't be put off.
Forget Sicily...
