Annoying Ads on the forum pages.

Is it just my computer using Linux that is more susceptible. I get a large square ad for Hyundai right in the middle of the forum page.
It makes the threads unreadable and although they seem to be rando are more often than not there.
Does anyone else get the problem?
Now I really appreciate this free forum and I certtainly won't argue with ads to help pay for the forum but this one is amking the pages uneadable. It has been going on for over a week and I can't understand why no one else has complained. Thanks in anticipation

Sure, I second the complaint!
This add seems to go through the "pop-up watch" from my Linux - Firefox system, althou it appears as well when using Windows - Firefox.
I would be gratefull to anybody knowing a solution to this annoyement.

I use firefox with XP and I get no ads at all. It must be something at your end.

I'm using IE7 on Windows XP, and no problems with pop up adds either

Firefox on XP. The big square ad only pops up if I go mouse-over the strip version. But then, these SUV's are in the way of many... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I get the same problem. I'm using Firefox on Linux too. I started a thread a while ago about this where some people suggested ways to block ads, which I do not want to do and others (mostly using MicroShaft) stated that they do not have the problem, which is fine.
My complaint however, was that these ads cover up what you are reading. They are supposed to trigger when you place your mouse on them but, I'm failry sure that they also trigger randomly as I am now very careful to avoid them and they still run.
I have nothing against advertising and I find relevant ads (which, these are not by the way) very helpful but I do object to any kind of intrusive advertising including pop-ups, drop-downs, wildly animated banners and spam mail.
IMHO these ads are a real pain in the bum and I only wish that whoever is responsible for them would read these complaints and do something about it.

Maybe a (partial) solution.
Linux - Firefox 2.0.
I just disabled Java Script.
It seems to work, althought you may have to re-enable it for other sites to work properly.

Hope this helps until a better solution pops up. ;-)

I didn't know I could get Firefox 2.0 for Linux yet ... I'll check it out.
However, as for disabling JavaScript - that has a very adverse effect on my own site so, I won't be doing it /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif (I am working on reducing my dependance on it though after a poll on this forum showed that it is not that uncommon for people to disable JavaScript).
I just don't see how annoying adverts help to sell anything.

using the adblock plus add in to firefox and it seems to work on these things once trained.

How does one deal with roadhogs, or water hogs for that matter, and stay sane? I'll go for name and shame. Here's one for a start.

I remember reading on this site that these ads will not appear if you register and logon. I only log on to post, and these Flash ads disappear when I logon. There are other solutions and a search for 'block flash' will produce several answers. I'm on W98 and XP, so I'm not sure if this applies to Linux or Mac..

I use Firefox on XP and have the freebie Adblock installed. go to tools / add-ons / get extensions. Also get the additional filterset.

I also have Norton, so maybe that does something too.

Not sure if we're talking about the same thing. I get annoyed at the banner which sometimes covers the righthand edge of the first few posts. Today it is urging that we subscribe to the mags which support this forum. I don't mind the advertising - it's the positioning of the banner. Just tried logging on and that does appear to get rid of the banner. I usually browse without logging on so may need to change that habit.

Using IE7/XP/and NTL's PopUpBlocker.

I think that's :Tools>Extensions>Get More Extensions.
I use adblock and it's great. It blocks those pesky Flash ads as well.

Nope. Tools / add ons. Have you got Firefox 2 yet? it has Session Manager built in. You shut the PC down, and when you open it again it automatically opens all the web pages you were previously at. Brilliant. Why didn't they do that years ago? And it doesn't seem to slowly eat up your RAM till your PC crashed, like the last Firefox did.
