The Anglers Teddington has recently undergone a major re-furbishment. In addition to the large number of negative reviews this has attracted, the gangway to the pontoon has now been removed so it is no longer possible to moor up and visit. This is perhpas no great loss judging by what customers have had to say about the refurbished pub on Trip Advisor etc., but with so few places to access the shore along the tidal Thames this is a significant loss in that regard.

Anyway - if planning a visit you'll need to use the 24hr mooring above the lock now.

Never liked it before the refit, The Tides End Cottage is so much better!

+1. It's a typical Fullers managed pub with poorly trained staff and no visible leadership. Last I went there it was sticky, dirty loos and the stench of stale ale by the hand pumps. The Fuller boys need to get out round their estate and poke the lazy grubby managers in the eye.

Whilst not disagreeing with you - isn't that pretty much how all / most chain pubs are nowadays? We have two chain pubs in our village and My Management was complaining that the standards in the latest takeover / convert had gone rapidly downhill.

As we live in the sticks and have to drive to the pub (since the horse was put-down) we just drink at home on the veranda, doncha' know.
The same on the boat - there never seems to be a pub near where we want / can moor.

Semi industrial Pubs owned by large organisations. Not just waterside honeypots either .
Coporate owners have borrowed heavily to invest in their " outlets".They need to pay back all that cash and need to fine tune everything to fractions of a penny. This includes staff and service.

A local pub, lost its long term publican and the freehold was purchased by local brewery.
There followed a series of young couples wishing to "Take advantage of a challenging career in managing a Pub".
All of them only lasted until exhaustion took over or their stake money ran out.Usually about 2-3 years.
You knew the end was near when they were buying booze on the QT from Lidle because it was cheaper than the brewery.
The brewey simply carried on advertising for ......................see above.

Classic example The Malta at Allington Lock. Dreadful service and food.........simply not enough staff.
On the upside they seem to have given up charging boats to moor on the wall outside pub, its owned by the EA anyway.
However.Your personal God help you if you do not register on arrival in their car park.

The 1989 Beer Orders Act forced brewers to sell off parts of their estates thus opening up the market for the likes of Enterprise inns and Punch to fill the gap. Bank rolled by US cash from firms like Blackstone, the loan repayments were so high that the leased pub estate became over rented.

The curious thing is, as OG allures to, is the seemingly never ending queue of enthusiastic people with money who want to take on these pubs, only to walk out the door skint just a few years later.

As for the managed estate, it seems to be operated by much younger staff now who are merely offering what the brand manual dictates at the lowest cost.

As a Teddington residnet, it was never going to be anything other than a disaster.

I have been going there since I was 18 (16 actually) and I am 45 now NOTHING has changed other than they have tried to cater for more people with the same size kitchen and bar.

Just moor up at the lock and stroll over the bridge and then up the high street, there are a huge number of decent restaurants there.

I suspect the pontoon bridge fell down due to complete lack of maintenance.

You could always join the Lensbury next door and moor up outside there.

I was in Twickenham on Sat night outside the Barmy Arms, people were using the street/bushes for toilets as the pub ones were so hideous. Both 'traps' were covered inside and OUT!!!! with the brown stuff and an inch of pee on the floor.

suspect boaters are not their main prey, lads out for a session.
The sheer hordes in their gardens ensured we always walked by
Well aware of the the range of decent eatries across the main road and beyond.
