Im making a clinometer, to measure the angle that the boat is at when on a reach, (roughly) what angle is the most i could realistically expect to get to? (with 0deg being horizontal and 90deg being flat on its side)

I have a very heavy fin keeled 23ft yacht. Its a long distance boat, not a racer.

If your SWMBO ever crews on the boat, dont add anything that will draw her attention to the angle of heel!

I should think if it goes beyond 45° you will be too busy reefing down to notice the inclinometer /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

20/20 rule of thumb comes to mind, i.e 20 deg of heel in 20 knots of winds with full main and jib. Anymore than that and you'll be too busy reefing!.

Agree with the anti-clinometer faction - what is the point of having one? Their capacity to demoralise the crew is second only to the masthead wind gauge (also totally unnecessary on a cruising boat). If it feels uncomfortable, reef.
