My anemometer has started to stick. Before I make the trip up the mast - not one of my favourite pastimes - has anyone any experience of what might be causing it (No clever comments about lack of wind!). Could it be something as simple as lubrication? - I left the mast stepped last winter so I didn't check it.

I had same problem and it turned out to be the whole assembly had seized due to wear on one face -apparantly a problem on marina boats where wind is always from same direction. Cost me a complete new sensor head I'm sorry to say at a price 70% of a complete new unit.

Mmmm - thought it might be a bit more than lubrication, given the sensitivity of these things. And I suppose it could be under-reading when it is working.

Can you recall the cost? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif And is it fairly easy to put right?.

Sh.................t! Mine's a Windex and only two years old - can it really have conked out so soon? (No need to reply - just a comment!)

Might have had an aborted seagull landing knock it out of line, or need lubricant. Light machine oil is he norm, either 3-in-1 or sewing machine oil.

My old Stowe has had the vane knocked off, but speed is dead accurate, and it get lube every 4-5 years, or so.

Thanks for that. I think, on reflection, mine might be a Stowe (Windex-type) - the instrument panels are all Stowe. I had the aerial replaced two years ago, not the rest of the kit, so a lube might be the answer. Certainly worth a try.

Thanks all for the help, as usual.

I took my stowe masthead fitting off 2 years ago because it had stopped working. It pulls apart easily, I gave it a clean, oiled it up and its still seems to be OK. The whole unit from the cups pulls out, just do it carefully and note down the order the bits come out.
good luck

Ours started to stick a few years ago and it was a spider that worked hard at night to build a web. It used to take 5 knots of wind to start the thing spinning. Spider got wise and made stronger web so it was a trip up the mast to remove spider ...

You don't actually say, but I presume that the cups have stopped turning, in which case I would agree with others. OTOH I have a Stowe and everything at the mast top seems to move OK, yet both speed and direction displays will occasionally (independently) stop reading. I have found that a firm, open handed slap on the display head usually makes both behave again...
