can someone please tell me the best type of anode to use, some say the shaft anode is the best, butwhen i used them they keep falling off after a short time.
now for the first time i used a large fishing boat type, connected to the engine.
has anybody used this type and how successful is it if at all. please advise type of wire best for connecting and also best position on engine to connect to.

It depends what it is that you are trying to protect. A shaft anode is intended to corrode preferentially over your prop and sterngear, which are typically all more noble than the zinc. Connecting your engine to an external anode is supposed to prevent internal corrosion of the engine water passages, although I have grave doubts as to its likelihood of success. The engine's own anode, fitted internally, is far more effective. Connecting bronze seacocks in a kind of ring main to an anode has been suggested but is now generally advised against. If you have brass seacocks they won't last very long anyway, so an anode could delay their decease for a while but don't expect miracles.

Shaft anodes falling off can be a function of design. I have used types that fell off after only a few months whereas others lasted for years. Try a different make.

I thought they removed your andodes with your tonsills when you got to be about 11 years old!!??

ANODES

Anodes are fitted to you boat and designed to be sacraficial ie. they wear instead of your stearngear/engine etc. It is important to fit the correct anode for the job.
Zink for salt water
Magnesium for Fresh or river water
The reason your anodes on your shafts may be falling of may be incorrect type or incorrect fitting.
Your best bet is to fit one anode to the hull for each drive train/engine
connect as follows Fuel filler(this provides a neccesarry earth), fuel tank(again for earth) to the engine, weed filter, sturn gland, one side of anode, other side of anode, 'P' bracket, rudder, exhaust outlet if brass or stainless (or to bolts holding boot on) Fit the anode close to the position where the shaft travels through the sturn tube out of the hull where it is closest to the shaft. You should use multi core 65 copper wire and under current regulations it should be green in colour
The best anodes the use by far are MG Duff you are best to speak to them about sizes. But dont use there galvanised bolts and nuts use A4 stainless ones and on the outside where the bolt comes through the anode after you have tightend it all up and finished the instilation. Fill the holes with mastic so that when you next need to change them the bolts are still intact otherwise you may have problems.
Also if you have a nylon coupling between your gearbox and shaft flanges u need to connect these for continuity. (if its R&D you can buy a pad which fits inside the coupling to do this!!) a bit of 65 with a ring termonal through a bolt each side will do this.
Dont forget to check your anodes in your engine/s and make sure they are the right type!!!
