I have 2 x 46ST Andersen winches and 2 x 12STs on our boat. I havnt serviced them before and wondered if I should just strip down and clean and grease them or if I should as a matter of course replace pawls and springs?

If so is there a decent supplier to recommend?

Thanks

Never replaced pawls & springs in mine, just a clean and grease. The UK dealer is IMP. You need to spell it Andersen if you are Googling for details. Anderson is an ex-company that made some boat or other. :)

It's worth opening winches once a year or so and giving them a clean. Personally I don't replace springs and pawls unless they are badly worn or broken. Test the springiness of the springs against a new one and if similar just put them back.

I think - though I am open to correction - that IMP are the importers and don't deal with the loikes of us. When I was looking for some Andersen winch spares I found them at Seateach, but only in rather expensive kits rather than the individual bits (self tailing springs) I wanted.

They will deal direct but only on person. Luckily I live 4 miles from their office. Their website has a list of dealers/agent but it may not be current.

In case our experience helps, we have had the same winches for 23 years. Cleaned but never replaced pawls or springs. So far so good.

ditto

I have 4 Andersens in the cockpit.

They are so easy to take the main drum off. I wipe off any visible dirt (not usually much) .

I mask the boat around the winch and give a light spray. close up. of 1in3 oil to moving parts,
I allow to run through for a while then wipe off any excess.

I've not taken pawls or any parts off and Andersens are such high quality that they need little else.
imho.
