...then can anyone think of an option that is really sub £40k and sub 40'?

I fancy myself as having an encyclopedic knowledge of yachts but apart from Colvics I'm struggling on this one?

and that is the thing. She has ruled out all of the smaller motor sailors that fall within a million miles of the budget. She used to work for the guy who import LMs and knows them well.

Hmm... oh yes, Colvic Victor 34!

Way under £40k (£25k - £35k depending on condition) and under 40ft.

P.S. She's not really a motorsailer. Well, she has a pilothouse, internal (and external) helm, and a big engine, but she sails like a beaut...

You haven't given criteria for minimum size, material or age, so here's some thoughts:

Neptunian

Neptune

Barbary Ketch

Swin Ranger

Nic 38

Spey Class

Sole Bay

Hunter 27 Pilot

Aren't most post 1960's cruisers really motor sailers (ie they've got ample engine power to be viable motor boat)? Or is a wheelhouse implicit in your idea of a 'motor sailer'?

Why not just bung a custom all over cockpit cover on.... and then zip it up while going along under power.... viola... your own motorsailer with enclosed wheelhouse.

Take a look at the Halberdier. Bullet proof build quality means that most these boats have stood the test of time pretty well, also owners have tended to cherish their boats, so despite their age they still represent great value for money.

I run the Halberdiers Owners Group and we have the location of most of the boats ever built, and they are scattered across the world from Alaska to Australia.

The 'Half Wheelhouse' means that you can get out on the water all year around and actually enjoy sailing in Mach and November !

The big rig also means good performance, you will not be disgraced when sailing in company with modern 'Euro Cruisers'

Halbs usually appear on the market between £35-£45k

Take a look at our Group site...

She's a lawyer so she has an evening job already.

The Victor is not the right boat for us. (I'm a part time dimplomat)

It wont be a Jeanneau.

Beyond that, I'm all ears. The Moody is tempting.

Look for an Hallberg Rassy HR Rasmus 35. Here's a pic of ours, our second home for 2 seasons now. She has completely converted swmbo to cruising life. The very first HR model I think. 30 years old, big engine, quality solid build (the boat, not swmbo!) Goes well under sail too. Long keel so get one with a bow thruster.

Solid roof covers half the cockpit, proper glass screen to see out of, perfect for uk weather. My brothers think I went mad and bought a motorsailer. Let them think on ...
