A book I bought a year or so back and have recently finally gotten to out of the pile of "yet to reads" is Raleigh Trevelyan's "Sir Walter Raleigh" biography. Not quite finished yet (he is in the Tower still) but will get it so over a few long flight sectors during this month.

Is packed with detail and names but I have found it very interesting. While I knew a bit about Raleigh was much new to me (at least - for example his own writings). Covers his own and sponsored American voyages, privateering, Drake, Elizabeth I and Raleigh's relationship with the court, his interests in Ireland, etc, etc.

Anyone else read it? But if not can be recommended if one enjoys history/biography. Is a Penguin paperback.

Haven't read the book, but the wondeful BBC Radio 4 did cover pretty much that in a series a few years back, so knew about the privateering (piracy) and his writings and costs of the voyages and how he covered them etc.
