Venice to Iggy

I paid 450 euro for 2 people, outside cabin + car both ways with Anek two years ago and want to take the car again this year but the best price I can get is 805 euro, again with Anek. Looks like I'll be flying.

Is this a Greek thing? business is down so double the price to maintain profit? A strange business model.

Brings back memories from 30 years ago - return crossings from Ancona, Bari and Brindisi with motorbiking friends. Settle down in the sleeping bag on deck in the lovely warm evening and wake up soaking wet at 2:00 in the morning with the deck streaming with rivers of condensation!

Great times though!

We did it last year, booking through a greek travel agent who got us very good discounts. The return trip was just over 300 euros including a cabin ( 2 adults + car ). This year our quote is 678 euros from Venice to Igou and 608 euros from Ancona. Too much. We're flying to Athens with Easyjet for £30 each.

+1 on that, we have used them for a few years. Just phone and they sort it out, very quick, seem to get bookings and cabins no problem and at a better or equal price to those I could find on the web. Pity they don't do rail tickets.

Have just looked at their web-site and prices appear the same as booking direct (with Superfast)

I have always found the Superfast website very easy to navigate, even with our non-standard requirements such as age concessions and travelling by motorhome. Last year we particularly wanted to sail with Minoan, whose site is a nightmare. After trying unsuccessfully to book ourselves aboard we contacted Viamare, who made us an offer better than their website showed and with everything arranged correctly.

I've used www.greekferries.gr several times before.

Book a deck class ticket and once the ship sails talk to the purser. usually they'll let empty cabins go for a fraction of the normal price. I've done it several times. Best I managed was a 4 bed outside cabin to myself for €50. If that fails I have seen 2 second pop-up tents erected in a corner of the deck.

In a van you might be able to get away with C.O.D along with the caravans, motorhomes and campers.

You can do Bari - corfu and it only takes 8 hours or so but driving the length of Italy puts the driving cost up considerably it's a hell of a trip. I've only braved it once.
