Keep meaning to post this. It's a photo of one of our old family boats, taken in the Solent (believe it or not) some time in the early 70s. Built by Taylor and Bates of Chertsey, in the 1920s. Sorry about the rather indistinct pic. quality.

Twin Perkins diesels, teak decks, en suite bath (really!), 55ft LOA and a magnificent 12 knots with the throttles against the stops. Eat yer heart out, Sunseeker. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

No Fablon, tho'

Edit: I meant to add that one reason for posting this pic. is that I saw a very similar, if not identical, boat on the visitors' moorings at Buckler's Hard in August. Anybody seen her?

"one" of our family boats eh? You aren't really sure about the lack of Fablon tho, are you? EVERYONE had Fablon in the 60's/70's. Oh - i spose yer gonna show off now and say it was Formica...

P'raps I'd better rephrase that. My old man bought and sold a succession of old bangers (as he called them), which he did up and sold on, but always consecutively. (However, I did own an Optimist at the same time). This one was undoubtedly the cream of the crop and we kept her for several years, during which the old man lived on her for a time. Arriving in her anywhere was an event......

Definitely no Fablon, but there was a seriously tacky 8 track cartridge player, complete with Swingle Singers tapes, in the Saloon. Will this do?

Stunning looking vessel, crewed by about five Henries in stripy polar necks (no really).

8 track eh!

8 track was ace (at the time) and the only compilation albums available were done by crappy session artists and were sold in Woolworths.

Now, Fablon...It ain't real Fablon unless it has a "steam iron" shaped melt hole in it, where you've been doing the ironing on the table.

i think Fablon should also include a nearly-flattened-down crease somewhere, and gooey bits near the corners. Recommended fablon colours include pink gingham check, any pattern with large orange/yellow flowers, and perhaps some others too..

My dad always kept a "stylaphone" on board, remember them?At the same time as he got this he dyed his hair bright orange with an early version of "Just for men" He did look something,pipe clenched between his teeth,bright orange hair, playing the Stylaphone very badly while covering everything in a cloud of dark green smoke cos he grew his own tobacco (badly).

Aha!! Blue gingham check was the colour of my mum's Fablon covered kitchen table...with a steam iron burn at the right hand side - which got covered over by a small square of....blue gingham check Fablon.

Moving the conversation on a bit...what ever happened to "Dolly Blue" You know the stuff - put all you whites in a sink full of cold water then tip dolly blue in and leave them to soak. Its meant to make your whites whiter, but in reality it used to dye them a very light shade of pale blue (temporarily).

But, you will never be able to top my mum's "Legumex". This real 60's contraption was an automatic potato peeler (seriously!). Place unit in a sink with 2 inches of water in it. Open lid and put in the potatoes. Close lid and rotate the handle on the lid for a couple of minutes. The rubber sucker feet held it onto the enamel. The water in the sink circulated into the machine and out came dirty water and just the very top layer of potato skin. Open lid and badda-bing!! peeled potatoes. And here is the magical piece of equipment..

All right, I confess. There was some formica on the worktop in the galley; though probably not from her original build spec.

I'm always amazed by the creative directions in which these threads move, but even I wouldn't have thought of a potato peeler, tho' a Ronco Foot Spa was always a possibility. A lesson to me, never to mention the F- word again. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Rolph Harris used to advertise those stylaphone thingies didn't he? Just for men I think is still available. Your dad didn't happen to have his own workshop at home did he? What about pale brown chunky knit cardigan with fake leather buttons? He sounds a bit like a friend of mine's father who fitted the above description.

Oh yes with all manner of useless things in Old Holborn tins.Once made an air pump for our fish tank.It was a wind driven thing with a long tube running inside.Strangely it actually worked, but ended up killing all the fish when we had a storm and the tank looked like there was an underwater volcano erupting.

And the K_TEL record selector which stopped "automatically " at the right place to replace your Jim Reeves record . Not forgetting the Long John coffee table with glass top and a pretty picture of a wooded lake or some such rubbish under!! Why did we buy such crap??

And the black and white television tennis and squash game .Its frightening how things have advanced in the last 30 years yet no more advances of moon landings --Strange that !! Dont wish to hijack your thread but did they really go???

The age of the computer has messed things up completely. The moon landings were very much a manual affair and the computing power was limited to less than is available from a mobile phone today.

They also cost a fortune - money that single countries don't have these days. So they send robots to do the science instead. Interestingly, on Mars, it takes the Rovers a full day to do less than an astronaught could do in 10 minutes in terms of science and geology.
