who carries a 2nd anchor on board? and if so how did you size it? ie against weight of boat or as used for secondary anchoring only use smaller anchor to stop swing etc? as presumably would be delivered into the sea by hand and hauled up by hand so weight plus chain/warp critical?

Second carried and even used once in an emergency when the chain to the primary one jammed up. Its in a locker somehwre, er, under the spare lube oil IIRC, with about 30 feet of chain which would need to be bent onto some rope most of the time!

Sizing? Came with the boat guv, but its a nice big Danforth and worked when I needed it to.

I've always carried two anchors, both suited to the size and weight of boat. I often use two anchors, it is a very secure feeling in strong wind or tide. Two different anchors will give you choices in different bottom conditions - say a Danforth for mud and a CQR for other bottom types. However, I switched from this arrangement to two CQR's which I find are reliable for the areas I sail in. A pound per foot of LOD is about right for a plough type anchor.

U used to use a large anchor for the kedge but have now gone over to using a flying anchor to simply hold my position and stop the swing.

The main use is when I am near to other boats and need to stop bumping into them - mind you , you need to ensure that their swing misses you as well.

using the wrong anchor can have disastrous consequences............

anchor fails and 2 die............

> Better make sure I am anchored well on the Thames then, wouldn't want to be shot at!

ok thanks all. my biggest thought/concern was having a large 20kg anchor plus chain etc, slung over stern and trying to pull this lot up!! anyway off to swindlery now!
