Anchoring with a Bruce

I enjoyed all the tips and experiences in the recent CQR thread. I use a Bruce on my 7 ton sloop. It usually lies on its side with only one fluke dug in and occasionally drags. I try to lower x5 depth of chain.
My tip for reducing drag and yaw when windy is to lower surplus chain onto the sea bed. When dug in (checked by snorkelling) I tie 10m nylon rope with rubber snubbers to chain and then to foredeck cleat.I then lower what chain is left in the locker to the sea bed. Thus from the anchor I have x5 depth chain along the sea bed held down at the proximal (boat)end by a pile of chain. This reduces yawing as the pile has to be dragged across the bottom.
BYe the bye last season I bought a Turkish copy of the very popular Bugel anchor and it dragged twice in first week!

We too use a snubber but just put out 5m of the stuff. Your idea of putting out more chain after the snubber has been attached is a great one. In fact I'm going to do that right now. Thanks for the tip!

I hope it works and that you don't wake up out of sight of land! The idea came from Bill Watson (American) who is liveaboard in Kusadasi and circumnavigator, hence we call it 'Bill's Method'.
Have you anchored at Cokertme east of Bodrum? Lazily we picked up a floating warp there, attached to a huge anchor on the sea bed (checked with snorkel) and retired to bed. We woke at 0600 to find ourselves 1/2 mile off shore with said anchor hanging vertically below us. Determined to set depth alarm in future.By the by, has it been excessively hot out there as in Greece? (we are back in UK till Sept.

Yes, hot as an oven! Liz and I have taken to sleeping on deck it's so hot.

Last time we went to Cokertme we moored up at the Cokertme Restaurant, which I can recommend. Really recommend. Not only are the moorings secure (we moored up in a southerly, so completely open to the elements) but the owner is a fantastic chap. We nipped over to see the restaurant recommended by Hiekel (Rose Mary) and he was an arrogant, obnoxious idiot. Kept boasting about how he was in Heikel's pilot guide, how great his food was, and so on, whereas the Cokertme Restaurant lot were unassuming and really pleasant.

1/2 mile offshore? That must have been a very scary morning!

Is Cokertme Restaurant same as Captain Ibrahims? The one to avoid is the third, tent-like, on right of the first two. Has numerous semi-floating lines and over-enthusiastic touts. Thus we fouled our prop and I think this explained why we had engine vibration thereafter.
By the by, hanging onto your CQR in remote bays as you do, what electronic gismo d'you use to get internet access and can you get internet weather forecasts? Daphne and I have not yet sussed this one but would like to bring out our laptop

Captain Ibrahim's is on the far left as you enter the bay. That's the one all the locals frequent. Rose Mary is run by that a-hole but recommended by Heikell, probably cos he gets a free dinner every time he visits Rose Mary. His jetties are falling apart. Cokertme Restaurant is on the FAR right, the very last one. It's only been there for four years so the jetty is in excellent condition and the moorings were fine - we were in 30-odd knots of a southerly wind, which meant Esper was bucking like a bronco in the in-coming swell. The restaurant was extremely friendly, food excellent and ambiance far superior to either Rose Mary or Ibrahims. Not sure if this is the same one you describe. It's a tiered restaurant, can't remember if it had a tent-like roof. I know Rose Mary's does and I think that may be the one you are describing.

With regards to the internet question I'll start a new post as it could be useful for other yachties in Turkey.....

One on the far right is the one with half submerged lines so we avoid it. I agree restaurant and folks pleasant but touts who come out and 'help' you pick up a mooring were incompetent. Friends on a Moody told us of similar experience. If you know them well, when you are next there, maybe tell them at least 2 boats reluctant to return. Of the 3 restaurants it is the least patronised and I suspect mooring problems could explain it.

Aha. Interesting. Best thing then is to anchor in the west bay and take the dinghy ashore /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Cokertme Restaurant is worth it as they have excellent home-made wine!

I've posted up a thread on internet connection for you. Hope you find it useful.

BTW - where are you based when in Turkey?

Sounds dreadful out there!!Im sure youd be much happier in the north with nice cool rain showers and not getting much over 12 degrees C its wonderful!!

Im not enthusiastic about the bruce, small ones just dont hold ive got a 15 kg one as a stern anchor as the 10kg broke out a couple of times and woudent reset as i pulled it in in fact it came in fully. Then i could take a stearn line ashore and another to the boat next to me in a bay id have been off for a sail!

The good thing about the bruce is they cost almost nothing and stowe nicely on the pushpit or transom they do mostly dig in well and hold well, its just haveing seen them break out and not reset is discouraging.

Also where do you put then on the fore deck?If you dont want it on the bow roller there difficult in that respect but ideal as a stearn anchor

Its stopped raining!!I cant remember what it was like to be hot??
