Anchoring wind against tide

My 36ft Moody has a lot of windage, so much so that under bare poles it was sailing forward against a 1.5 knot tide. So when I tried to lay the anchor, I started facing the same way as all the other boats i.e. into the tide, but as I dropped the anchor we were actually moving forwards and the chain was being laid out below the boat.

I tried towing a bucket to increase the drag but was still being pushed forward by the wind.

Any suggestions as what would be the best anchoring technique?

Have the same problem since adding a sail-pack, she on the go all night. My research has lead me to believe lowering a 30lb weight down the the anchor chain to within a few feet of the bottom will help. It brings the added bonus of improving anchor holding. I will be trying it out next week, report back in September.

if it's for a short time at anchor, what about kedging from the stern ?

Ignore the lay of the other boats and approach in the direction that YOU will fall back on.
or
Lower anchor till it is just touching then don't pay out till you start to drift, then put engine into reverse tick-over.

Just head into the wind and drop the hook, as normal.
If you pick a spot amongst mobos rather than other keel boats you should have fewer worries about swinging in contrary directions.

Being wind-rode is much more pleasant than being tide-rode, make the most of it.

I'm afraid I don't quite see the problem. If you are going to be wind rode, you want to lay the chain downwind from the anchor. Doing so while moving forwards over it may be a little unconventional, but no more than that.

Would you have been surprised or worried if it had been a 20kt wind and a 1/2 kt tide?

Simple. Just anchor from the stern

Your wind and tide anchoring position is going to be right at sometime during a 12 hour period, but I'd choose to face into the tide.



Of course it depends on what anchor you........!!!

Steer hard to the side the wind is most dominant from. Your boat should then stabilise...
