I'm hoping to go up the Ore & Alde in the next few weeks.

I have a 15lb CQR plus a 7metre length of 6mm chain plus warp - is this good enough to hold the ground in these parts? I've read the current can push 6 knots and hope it'll hold in decent ground. My unter 23 displaces some 2,900lbs.

As the entrance can be tricky, I'm going in about mid flood tide - will exit some -5 HRS before HW. Any tips on the entrance would also be appreciated. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Your ground gear sounds just about sufficient as long as you don't anchor just inside the entrance. Abraham's bosom [ a wide area where the Butley River joins into the Ore, between Havergate Island and the mainland] is a favoured anchoring area or alternatively at Short Gull which is further upstream but still between Havergate and the mainland. The tidal currents are much less in these areas.

Have a look at the attached website. It is fund of information for the Deben and Ore entries.

Also worth talking to the harbour masters. The guy at Felixstowe was really helpful when I brought my boat up the coast last year. Don't know about the Ore though.

Hope it goes well

fully agree with reeac
also try the Butley River just off of the Lower Gull
u can also usually get a mooring @ Orford £5 a night clean landing or tie-up to O.S.C jetty / pontoon
a visit to the Jolly Sailor recomended especially on "Singing Night" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
( dont order the "Steak Pie" its a steak stew + toupee , very disapointing as advertised as home made & the two parts have never been in an oven @ the same time) /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Sounds OK though more chain always better... I've frequently visited the Ore/Alde from the Deben & you should have no problems, the entrance if anything being more straightforward than the Deben - the websites already mentioned have good information. I wouldn't attempt to anchor in the lower reaches but suggest behind Havergate Island or in my favourite spot just off Boyton Quay in the Butley River. In the upper reaches it can be very peaceful near Iken Cliff but you need to be very careful in the confusion of withies just before it!
