Forumites may remember my anchoring fail last year.

www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?321540-Anchors-Chain-and-Warp&highlight=jakeroyd

Update
Anchored in the Dandy hole yesterday with complete success.
Original cqr but with 20m of 8mm chain.
Anchored at the top of a neapy hw in 3.7m with all 20m of chain out.
At lw I saw 1.2m lowest.

OK speed of the tide was not maximum due to neaps but there was a stiff Easterly gusting in all day. Up to maybe 30knt
The Dandly hole is a bit exposed in an Easterly but it gave the kit a stiff test.
Coped with changes in tide direction as well which I think was my undoing last time.

Well pleased even though hauling in the chain takes a lot more effort than before

I suppose I am just pleased everybody's recommendations worked.
Thanks to all who advised on the original thread

Ah! I understand better, 'jakeroyd', now I've re-read your original thread.

So you've now used 20m of chain, on about 5:1 in a well-known, well-used river anchorage, and it held just fine. That's what I would expect, given the place and the conditions.... and just what generations of Tamar yotties have done.

The extra scope and weight of chain seems to have been the answer. I'd suggest there's no need to change your anchor.... putting out more scope has been the answer to anchoring concerns since Adam was a boy, and your CQR has a long history of doing the job well, given a bit of understanding. There's no good reason why what you have won't continue to do the job for you.

I anchored a rather-heavier Rival 34 for several years in Scottish lochs, the Isles of Scilly, the CIs, Ireland, the Plym and other West Country estuaries, using a CQR and an initial 20m of 8mm chain. More was available if needed. It rarely was.....

Good luck with the rest of your summer's anchoring - but be wary of Barn Pool ( see 'Fishwick - West Country Cruising' ).... ;)
