A couple of months ago I asked forum's advice about anchoring off Edgecumbe Park in Plymouth. As usual lots of good advice was forthcoming: thanks.

We spent a couple of nights on the way down and back to/from the West Country. Its a great spot for a walk after a period cooped up on the boat and the dog loves it.

Here we are anchored in about 11m, and not much further than that from the shore.

No,held fine. It's out of the main stream - in fact there seems to be a small back eddy.

Touch wood, I can't say I have ever had problems with holding and we have anchored in some strongish winds and streams. We make sure the hook is in then go to sleep. We have a 17Kg Bruce and 10mm chain, which is a bit oversized for our boat. I always put out lots of scope - I sleep better that way.

As described in detail in Mark Fishwick's 'West Country Cruising'. Do remember that part of that little bay is very 'foul' due to the RN's several-hundred y.o. practice of dumping unwanted stuff just a few hundred yards from the Dockyard.

....And my old mate K's practice of ignoring well-meaning advice, and leaving good anchors and chain behind when frustrated by his own systemic stupidity.

"Dumped it in deep water, did we, Chief? Just like you said, Chief....!"

:)

Yes. It looks as if we just missed a foul bit. More by luck than judgment though, since we were too busy anchoring to look at the pooter until it was all down and we were putting on a brew.

does not seem to deter plenty of peeps from dropping the hook there... we have done ourselves, regularly. Great spot, actually. Very scenic with lots going on too.

RNSA used to have two moorings for members there, but they were removed 'cos the Navy could no longer afford to maintain them.

I fouled and lost an anchor there about 20 years ago, and it wasn't where the chart shows either a wreck or obstruction. It hasn't deterred me from anchoring there since then although I am always apprehensive about weighing in case of another unpleasant surprise.
