Over the weekend I anchored in Whytecliff bay for the first time and was very impressed with the location.

It got me thinking that there must be other bays on the eastern Isle of Wight that would work with winds in the west. So I scanned the online C-Map charts and came up with a potential candidate as Luccombe Bay at the southern end of Sandown bay.

Has anyone tried it? What was the bottom like? Does any swell creep round?

Thanks

You can anchor most places if you are in the lee of the wind.
Have used Luccombe when I deemed it too foggy to go across, and yes swell does bend in.
If wind is northerly then South of Island also has good overniters. Have had some good rolly nights tucked well inside Atherton Ledge. However I would always in pref go to Freshwater if any kind of SW swell running.

I was anchored in Whitecliff bay on Sunday morning. It was empty when we arrived at 10.00hrs but was quite busy when we left at 15.30hrs. Is it a popular anchorage? The ledge to the South of the bay could be quite exciting if one got to close - the tide fairly rips over the top until it's fallen far enough for the ledger to appear. I guess at LWS the bay would dry a fair way out and it wouldn't be possible to go in close to get shelter from the South. SO it's only a Westerley weather anchorage I think. Certainly bad news with an Easterly!

I arrived at Whytecliff at about 15:00 (a Moody 44), so you would have probably seen me before you left - I was anchored the furthest out - still only had 1 metre under the keel.
