We're in Falmouth, looking at the Friday/Saturday weather window for crossing to Aberwrach. I'm thinking of leaving early Friday morning, say 2am. The trip is 95 miles, fairly long for single-hander, though I have done longer. I could cut it down to 85 miles by anchoring Thursday afternoon in Housel Bay, just east of the Lizard, and resting there. Northerly winds are forecast.

Anyone done that? Feasible? Or got any advice?

I'm Not experienced crossing the channel at that point but know my way around Falmouth and the lizard.
If it were me I'd go straight from Falmouth so as not to have to worry about the strong tides round the lizard - I try and simplify as many things on long single-handed passages.

I have never used the bay but in the absence of anything better -

With gales to the west and swell building I think there is a good chance of rocking and rolling in there. I have always had a good kip in St Mawes before setting off; if you time your departure you will whistle down Falmouth Bay with the tide under you.

I have never anchored In Housel Bay, But have often anchored in Parn Voose Cove, half a mile North East. The holding is good sand and I have been happy to abandon the boat there and dinghy ashore at Church Cove for a pint at The Lizard.
Anything from the North or west of North is fine. If its East of North only stay if its very calm, and know where the Vrogue rock is when entering and leaving
The fact that The Lizard Lifeboat is the other side of Church Cove is comforting.

Plank.

you would still be faced with an overnight passage. I would get a good nights sleep in Falmouth and set off well rested rather than have an uncertain nights sleep to save a few miles. I would be more interested in arriving off L'AberWrach in daylight if possible on a flood tide.

doesn't answer your actual question though as I dont know the anchorage.

Not a nice place, lots of tide and rocks nearby. Kiilcobben RNLI station is better.

I note from BA2345-9, about 1nm SE of Bass Point, an area of 'Fishing Pots' is depicted. Is this marine hazard any of your responsibility? How are they marked? And how much do you charge for fresh crab?

Maybe a bit out of date. There are about 150 or so strings of pots from the Manacles to about 6nm WSW of the lizard, out to the six mile, each with two ends. Some will only have a buff, some a dhan. Mine are in Mounts Bay, broadly up to a mile or so offshore, from The Lizard to Mountamopus buoy. Fresh hen crab off the boat about £2 each, £5 to £10 for a decent big hard cock, but from my shop, cooked, about £4.50 a kg.

TMI!

Watchdog...! Referee...! Vicar....! That Janner has just made a rude.....

OK, thanks all for the info, and the entertaining innuendo. If it is not a nice place, and with the swell making it rock and roll, I think I will stay safe and rest in Falmouth or maybe Durgan on the Helford.
