Looking at the chart there seem to be a number potential anchorages in the vicinity of the mouth of the dart with moderate shelter from either east or west swell and nice depths. Combe bay, near ladies cove, Newfoundland cove etc. But my chart is not clear what's on the bottom in any of them. Anyone know if those or any others are reasonable holding for an overnight stop?

Ty!

October's PBO has an article called Start Bay anchorages. Not from mememory - I've got a copy in front of me. Says holding is excellent throughout the bay on sand and shingle

I have used the little cove just to the East of Kingswear Castle. Vey snug you may not want to stay overnight.
For this kind of work you could look for an appropriate secondhand copy (four volumes I think, pub 1970s) of Robin Brandon's South England Pilot. He lists upwards of 150 anchorages between Beer Head and Land's End.

Berry to Start

In settled weather with offshore breezes there are indeed countless safe and comfortable anchorages between Berry Hd and Start Pt.

I have personally anchored overnight in many of the bays and inlets, and even off Slapton Sands, where it's steep-to so you have to be fairly close into the beach. Holding has been good - not had a fright on any night - use a decent scale of chart, set an anchor light and keep a weather eye .....

Enjoy: it's a fabulous coast, with good swimming before breakfast, too.
