Hi there

I'm looking for recommendations on beaches and anchorages in Menorca.

Reading here it's clear that there are lots of forum members with great local knowledge. We're based in Mahon and have a RIB for a few days. Anyone with tips for local gems would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Too many to list!

Assuming the RIB is in Mahon then a blast up the East Coast to Es Grau is worth the effort or if you want to "turn right" along the South coast try Cala Torret (Binibeca beach).

If you want to explore further in either direction just keep going and hug the coast There are great anchorages around nearly every corner especially in a RIB

Have fun

Hi Chantal,

Loads of places to go depending on how calm it is and the wind direction.

If it was a northerly, the south is beautiful with loads of White sand beaches in calas.

Our first stop used to be biniparratx which is quite sheltered.

Calas covas has amazing cliffs and a beach round the corner if memory serves. We saw nude rock climbing there! Cala en porter is larger and more commercial so not as nice but good if busy. Son bou is a beautiful long beach but you need really calm conditions to go there. A bit further on, Cala mitjana is beautiful but small. Cala Galdana has a big hotel but is more sheltered - we got a fake Frank sinatra blasting tunes from the hotel last time we were there!

The real gem of the south coast in my view is macarella / Macaret which is stunning.

Then, in a westerly, take a buoy inside colom island on the easy. Small beach there which is nice. That's the es grau bit.

On the north side of the island there are fewer calas. Fornells is worth a visit and usually has buoys out - but give the spiny lobster in the restaurants a miss. Allegedly the king of Spain's choice, but only if he's paying in my opinion...

The two other calas worth visiting are the horseshoe Cala - Arenal de castell. A bit commercial but very sheltered. The highlight I think is Cala pregonda which is beautiful but in a rib, Cala pudenta is also great.

You can go round the whole of menorca in a day easily so you can check out 2/3 of the southern calas in a day no problem.

Happy to help if you need more and some round here know much more than I do!

Oops, only just seen this Chantal. Sorry. Been in France. Is your Menorca trip all over now, so no point in posting a reply? :-)

I'll second Es Grau. One of the few anchorages in Menorca in which you can shelter from virtually any wind (if you tuck in behind the island) and there are little nooks and crannies amongst the rocks that you can explore by RIB. Personally I didn't much like Fornells. Yes there are buoys to hang onto but the surrounding scenery is a bit boring and the grassy sea bed doesn't make the sea particularly enticing to jump into

Well they aint in the office (again..) so I am assuming they are still there!

OK then. Woodie1000 listed losts of nice places but the crucial thing in a RIB is to avoid look for the monority of places where the beach is not closed off by a line of yellow swimmer-protect buoys. With that in mind then on the n coast the little beach on the south side of Isla Colom (aka Es Grau) is lovely. Beach the boat.

I agree w Deleted User that Fornells is manky

Moving on westwards along the N coast, Pudenta and Pregonda as mentioned by woodie are fab. You can beach the boat in sand on the little island off Pregonda. And Mongofre and the little beaches near there are nice

On the s coast, Woodie's suggested Cala en Porter is nbg anymore becuase they have coned it off to mobos, but check out the in-cliff nightclub on the E corner as you enter: fab place and Woodie would very much like to work there, as proprietor

Further west along the s coast there are lots of calas. mitjana is lovely, but no boat access to beach. Cala Trebaluger is fab, with full beach access, 50% nudist, and 200% recommended if you anchor right up on the beach. Check out the river behind too. Cala macarella is nice too and has beach access via a dinghy lane. Galdana isn't the nicest but is ok if you are there and the wind goes easterly and you need shelter. Beach access is by 2 dinghy lanes but overall Galdana is only 5/10.

There is a tunnel through the stuck out cliffs 100m E of the entrance to Cala Mitjana and you should go right through in the RIB, especially if it's a renter and the deposit is small :-)
