hi-anybody know how well maintained the moorings are off ramsey and details of approach to any anchorage area (is there one?) and eddies etc
any information much appreciated-thank you

To my knowledge there are no moorings off Ramsey Island. The only ones I can think of are a few at St Justinians, which are private or for the tripper boats such as the ones in the link above. You might be lucky and find an unoccupied one, but could well be asked to move. As someone who dived and maintained moorings there for a number of years, I'd say be very careful if picking up one - many are unsafe.

There are also moorings at The Waterings, but are owned by the RSPB and private boats, again.

You can anchor safely at Porthllysgii bay, just to the East of the South end of the Sound, or, of course, stay at Solva. To the North of the Sound, the South end of Whitesands is OK for anchoring in S/SW winds, but be aware of the rocks between there and the sound, Gafeiliog and others.

As for the Sound itself, The Bitches, Horse rock and Shoe rock are the obvious hazards. VERY generally, when the current runs one way, there are back eddies running the opposite direction on both the island and mainland sides.

Slack is 3hrs after HW Milford, 2.5 hrs after low milford. It runs Nortwards for approx 3hrs either side of HW and Southwards 3 hrs either side of LW milford.
