Apologies in advance for the following question.
Assuming you have chain and rope and one of those winches with a chain-gipsy on one and a rope drum on the other side. How on earth are you switching over under high loads once the rope is in and chain comes out of the water?

Just as you would a snubber, either a little hook with proabably a very nautical name that hooks one link, or a small shackle. Attach to chain holding it on a cleat, then release rope and use this rope and hook to pull the chain up enough to get links over the chain end, a bit fiddly someteimes. Easiest way is to use a sheet winch to pull it up a bit with the hooky thing.

Many (?most) gypsies will take the chain and the warp. Have a look in the manual for your windlass to see that your warp meets the spec, or post the details here - someone will probably know.

Further to my original reply, I forgot to mention that usually one tries to motor towards the anchor when bringing in the chain so that the maximum force is the weight of the chain per meter, times the depth in metres plus the weight of the anchor. Plus the weight of the other guy's rode if you've brought that up as well /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif but as a general rule, don't make the windlass do any more work than you need to - they do burn out and they are a big load on the batteries even if the engine is running.

I have the Lofrans Tigress and the book says you can use rope. I can't remember the details - I would offer to look it up for you but mine is a 1998 version and they might have changed. Best to ask the supplier. I seem to recall that octoplait-type rope is preferred for the gypsy and because it lies better in the chain locker.

Not the question, I know, but have you exhausted the arguments in favour of a mixed rode as opposed to chain-only, in your situation?

Thanks. Yep I got all the rode I need and just wanted to find the most practical way to use it (Chain-rope) on my new winch. shall try whether it bites the rope /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)
