Great!!

Any idea what's wrong? S/L anchor winch draws its power from a bow battery. when winching. it dies a death, just as though the battery is knackered.

New battery made no difference (110Ah). Does this mean the winch is knackered?

Ive checked the cables for loose connections and cleaned the joints.

What else could it be?

Hi Cliff

As recent owners of a sealine we found that the winch would stop during operation. We discovered that this was mainly, nearly always as we brought up the last few feet of chain and the reason was that the chain had developed a twist which jammed the slotted winding wheel which caused a strain on the winch and it stopped. We ran all the chain out onto the jetty and carefully wound it back in. No problems since. Try that first? Roy

Thanks but its not this. I had to pull the anchor up by hand. The drum wouldn't even take in loose chain. Im wondering if its a dodgy solenoid contact. later today, Im going to connect the winch directly to a battery to see what happens. If the winch works it must be a faulty solenoid or bad connection somewhere.

any more detail on the 'dies a death' - I assume you mean it gradually slows but over what period, does an increased load make a difference and what happens if you run it in very short bursts with long intervals between?

Another thing to check - is the winch motor getting hot? This will diictate if it's getting the current but can't use it or not getting it.

Solenoid is on/off and is inconsistent with the above I would have thought.

that was the impression I got - def. check the heat of the motor; if it's getting hot then you could have some physical restriction problem, if not it's more likely to be on the current supply side.

Sounds obvious but do you have an isolatoin switch for this battery? If you do my money would be on that if it's a key type that doesn't fail closed.

I have seen a number of posts on an american forum about problems of water ingress on these models. So suspect that you may have the same problem. If the motor is really hot when it stops, then that is your problem, and it is pull it apart or replace time!

when I had the 33, my winch did the same, I replaced the motor, horrible job, no room in anchor locker to move, and it was fine.
Then the foot switches failed - replaced them too and all was well
