anchor warp

I am about to fit a Simpson-Lawrence HiSpeed anchor windlass, which I bought unused through the forum. My preferred anchor cable is 50 m of 8 mm chain, spliced onto 50 m of multiplait nylon. I was about to order this, when the chandler said that the rope/chain gypsy on the windlass would chew up the multiplait, and he recommended I use 3-strand instead.

Does anyone have any experience of this happening?

With the 50-50 cable, it is very rare for me actually to deploy the nylon warp, it is there for use in extremis, as 50 m of chain is normally plenty. The other option is to haul the nylon in by hand, and then use the windlass for the chain. I have a bad back, so I want to minimise the amount of strain involved.

I will use 3-strand if I have to, but I have found multiplait easier as it is better at self-stowing in the anchor locker.

Your chandler is correct. Either chain all the way or three strand. Multiplait is great for deploying by hand or on a drum but not on a combination gypsy.

If you've got a bad back then sod's law will come into operation on the one occasion that you try and haul in the rope by hand. If you normally never use the nylon, could you not flake it or coil it figure-of-eight in the locker under the chain? That way you could run it out if needed and worry about re-coiling it at a later time.

You are not allowing for senile decay. I had totally forgotten I had posted the same question. I could say, in mitigation, that I have a swine of a cold, but the real truth is, I've lost my marbles.

I was going to trade myself in for a new model, but the part-exchange price offered was lousy...

trade in's are rarely worth it so stick with it!

I realised that anything I said would likely be insulting - from "have you lost your marbles...." to " someone else has this same issue see here...and someone then pointing out I had lost my marbles and you had already asked" - so just pointed to the previous post.
On balance I would use octoplait because you will be up at the windlass when retrieving the anchor so if you see it start to slip (and therefore eventually wear the warp) you will simply stop it. It flakes better, will go out easier and handles better. I even suggest that it is gripped better by the gypsy but yes, it can wear quickly.

Hope it all works out.

I saw it advertised in the 'For Sale' section of this forum. A very nice couple living near Erskine on the Clyde had bought a new boat, a Moody as I recall, which came with it fitted. They wanted an electric windlass, so took off the manual one. I also bought a load of 3-strand warp and a new Bruce anchor from them. It was sheer luck. I can only suggest that you keep an eye on the Forum and sailing magazines, but it might be expensive and difficult for you to follow up adverts in the UK, since you are based in France. Perhaps you should try locally.

Otherwise, you will have to buy new. I think Lewmar took over some of the S-L range when S-L went bust, so you might try ordering one.

Best of luck.

Ill look at there site now. I bought a SL hyspeed from the boat yard in Cannes in 1990 for £100 or 1000ffr then and used it very very often, never had a flat batterie!!!!! and even useing my full weight on the end of the 3foot leaver to lift several anchors and chain when leaving a crowded habour. The "bicycl" chain never broke nor in all that time did i check the oil!! A really good winch, now i want one for a folkboat and was amazed to find SL dident exist

The lofrans the equivelent i really dont want. The SL was perfect, when i first bought it,it was to be a temporary replacement for a broken electric windlass, within a few days it prove to be so good i fitted it permantly on my 12ton Hillyard, now i also need an sl baby blake i also found in France for £100 and was stolen befor it got fitted.
Ive never seen a S/H section hear? i will look for that as well. Saddly with the increese in boats in France now S/H is very difficult to find and in the few S/H shops expensive, and another reason why theift (always bad in France) has got worse
Postage from the UKs not expensive so long as you use parcel post not dhl
