Up until now I've not used the anchor on my boat. It's on a fairly paltry chain at the moment and I'd like to add some rope to this so I can stay positioned over wrecks for fishing and generally anchor the boat!

From another thread I see people are recommending boatropes on ebay and I saw this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Anchorplait-multip...1742.m153.l1262

Would this be ok for a Searay 225?

Thanks.

Looking at your location I presume you intend fishing/wrecking in the English Channel?? if so you will need at least 600feet of rope to enable you to hold bottom, i.e. water depth x 3, and even that is pushing it, it can be very costly on anchors if you do not have sufficient scope.

Yes I'm moored in Brighton however where i fish it tends to be around 50 feet. There's also a good 20 ft of chain on the anchor. WOuld this be sufficient with 100ft of rope?

How do you lose anchors?

Yes that's the English Channel alright /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I've never been to the deep wrecks and tend to fish around 50-70 ft.

you lose anchors by NOT deploying enough scope, and letting go too close to a wreck, i.e wreck in 100ft then the rope required is three times that at least so 300feet, so as to be able to fish the wreck scour you will need to be 6 times depth of water i.e. 600ft from wreck. That is allowing the boat to stop (hopefully) 300 feet in front of wreck and for your baits to go down and stop in the scour, providing you have enough weight on the line, as this requires the same amount of line out as anchor rope deployed. Failure to give rope results lost anchor, failure to get far enough away before deploying result lost anchor, and even when you think you have got it right you will still lose anchors from time to time. My advice would be to use cheap anchors, and if you want to drop one into the wreck then use a grapple made from welded up reinforcing rod.

You will need a lot more warp than 100ft! If it is for wreck fishing, beg, steal or borrow the Blue three strand nylon that BT use to pull the cables through underground pipes. This stuff has 600ft on a drum, small diameter, no great loss if you lose it and plenty strong enough for your boat size.
