should it last?

I haven't carried out a close inspection but next time I'm on the boat I want to. It's been on my mind and I wonder if there is a recommended time to check n re-splice, like replacing standing rigging.

Can anyone help?

A few years ago I used 16mm 8-plait nylon spliced to 8mm short-link chain for over five hundred deployments in 8 seasons before replacement for rusting of the chain and general wear and tear, not concentrated at the splices.

If it is done properly it should last the life of the rope. If, however you have a short length of chain and then rope, you may get wear and abrasion over the length of the splice, but this would be obvious on inspection.

Thanks for the replies all. In general it is mostly chain that is deployed. I noticed though that the splice looked a bit "fluffy" a couple of weeks ago and made mental note to look more closely. It's 11 years old, I think better be safe than very sorry.
Cheers Rob

Have a look at it. If the strands are shredding, cut off and re-splice.

I find that the last few feet of rope tend to abrade where it is dragged across the bottom by the weight of the chain. Every few years when it starts to look ragged I cut the end off and start again.
