Hello all, I have a couple of queries regarding my proposed new anchor setup.

I have a 27ft MOBO, a Monterey 275. I am replacing my 7.5kg bruce anchor with a 6kg Delta. the next size up on the Delta was 10kg so I am thinking that 10kg is overkill? Anchoring will mainly be daytime lunch stopovers in the Solent and some West Country Cruising. I may attempt an overnight too if conditions are light. Do people think this is enough anchor for the boat?

Secondly, I have purchased 40m of 6mm chain to go with the anchor. It weights a shed load!!!! Previous setup was 5m of chain and the rest rope so much lighter. I know this question is probably impossible to answer but has anyone experienced putting all chain into a 27ft American Sports Cruiser with no issues? Given the weight I am worried that when I install the chain, the bow is going to sink...

Many Thanks

Jonathan

We have a 6kg Delta anchor and 30m of chain on our 25ft boat.

Not had a problem with the set up yet and it hasn't sunk the boat!

Thanks for the reassurance! Probably just paranoia on my part.. Have you overnighted on anchor with your setup?

I used to have a karnic 2460 which looks and weighs like a walkround american sports fisher. On this I had a 6kg Delta with 10 metres of 6mm chain and 180 metres of 12mm warp. We have anchored (for fishing purposes) in 40m depth with no problems.

I would guess you would be looking at depths sub 10m for picknicking so you should have no problem with your proposed setup

I did this was a 23' cabin cruiser, actually, I think it was 8mm chain!
As you say, incredibly heavy, but we didn't sink. If anything, it felt a little bit more stable with all that weight in the nose and helped get on the plane.

Transporting the new 50m of 8mm chain to the new boat was made easier with a solid plastic box lashed to a sack barrow. I was fairly sure the wheels were going to punch through the pontoon, but all went well!

You can never have a big enough anchor or long enough chain. If you are planning to overnight or even just take the dinghy ashore during a lunchtime stop then a 10kg anchor will give you extra security. As for the boat sinking with the extra weight at the bow I can assure you it wont!

Btw in my experience the Rocna anchor is a better all round anchor than the Delta
