Are there any online charts to indicate anchor size / type by boat size/displacement?

Specifically, I would like to know whether a bruce 7.5Kg is adequate for my 26’ long keel boat or should I go for the 10kg version?

Also, what is the usual arrangement for holding the anchor on the bow roller?

Many thanks for your help.

Try jimmy green marine website theres a guide there for you to think about. No doubt you will get a lot of 'expert' advice. Big is better but not so that you get a hernia.

We have an old heavy fin-keeled 27' boat with a 20lb CQR and its a bit puny for the anchoring we do.

Going to Scillies next week and will be a getting a 12kg plough for that extra peace-of-mind but not too big so we can't get the damn thing back on board!

We do, on this forum, love anchor threads and a search will yield masses of (in some cases contradictory) information.
One or two points - the original Bruce is no longer manufactured. Copies are widely available but a recent test (see Dec 2006 YM) should give food for thought, in fact I would strongly urge reading this article before buying any anchor. There are several anchors which performed well on this test and at least one would fit neatly on your bow roller.
It has been said, even by Bruce aficionados, that the smaller sizes do not work as well as the larger ones.
I used to use a 7.5 kg Bruce copy on my 25 ' boat. In my view an ideal door stop / objet d'art. I have tried to sell it but the wisdom of my colleagues is proven by the fact that no one wanted to buy it. It's possible that a "real" Bruce might have performed better.

Why do you want a Bruce, and why not just go for 10Kg anyway? 10Kg is easily manageable by most crew.

Th only good thing about the Bruce IMHO is that is stows nicely on most bow rollers and doesn't have nasty sharp bits to scratch your gel coat (or dig into the seabed).

AS for stowing on the bow roller - whatever works on your boat. Every configuration of bow, bow roller and anchor is different. Deltas seem to stow nicely on most bow rollers and are sold as being 'self launching', whatever that means.

[/ QUOTE ]E.g. this sizing chart (but it's not for Bruces! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif)

[/ QUOTE ]In my opinion a Bruce or Bruce type is not adequate for anything. The simple answer to your question is you must oversize it if you insist on one, in which case the 10Kg should be the bare minimum.

However you can no longer get (new) Bruces, and the earlier poster's comments concerning copies are quite correct.

On the mention of the Yachting Monthly testing, follow the link.

[/ QUOTE ]Depends completely on your roller. A good roller will hold the anchor firm once the chain's pulled tight.
