Anchor Shank / Bow roller issue

Hi All,

This weekend was the first outing on my recently purchased 80's Moody 36S. Anchored 3 times over the weekend but had the same problem in all cases.

The problem is that as soon as I start lowering, the anchor pivots over the roller and the aft end of the shank is raised more than the cheeks with the result that the chain ends up jumping the roller. Once its placed back lowering goes fine.

Hoisting the anchor, all goes well until the anchor shank comes back up in the roller. When it reaches the mid way pivoting point it is hitting the bottom of the roller reefing before stowing itself.

To resolve these issues I am considering the following:

1. Place a pin to keep the shank / chain in the roller. - In fact the pin is already in place and can be used to keep the chain in the roller, but cannot be closed with the anchor in place so defeats the purpose?

2. Change stemhead fitting to a pivoting bow roller - Previous boat had this type and it worked fine but it is an expensive and complicated solution as the current bow roller incorporates the stem head / forestay fitting.

3. Resign myself to handling the anchor manually for the initial launch and final hoisting bit! - not ideal!

Is this a common problem? Any recommendations?

Regards,

Duncan

Unless I am very careful, my anchor also hits the base of the roller furling when it comes over the roller, just as you've described. (Sadler 32 - 35lb Sowester plough)

But I'm hauling it up by hand anyway, because I don't have a windlass.

I dare say there's an anchor somewhere with a shank shape that avoids this problem...
